How Early Should You Leave Park City for Your Flight?

Oct 16, 2026 SLC Mountain Transfers team 4 min read

The drive math, the days that blow it up, and a simple rule for when to leave Park City, Deer Valley or the Cottonwood Canyons.

Quick answer

  • The drive from Park City to SLC airport takes about 40 to 55 minutes in normal conditions, over I-80 through Parleys Canyon.
  • For a domestic flight, leaving about 3 hours before departure is a sensible default. For international, about 4 hours.
  • Add 30 to 45 minutes on snow days and on the busy holiday weekends, when everyone heads home at once.
  • From Snowbird or Alta, avalanche control can close the canyon road for hours, so plan the night before.
  • Check road status the night before and again before you leave. Move your pickup earlier rather than later.

For a domestic flight, leave Park City about 3 hours before departure, and about 4 hours for an international one. The drive itself is about 40 to 55 minutes in normal conditions, and the rest of that time covers check-in, bags, security and the winter days when I-80 slows to a crawl.

On a snow day or a peak holiday weekend, add another 30 to 45 minutes on top.

The drive in normal conditions

Park City sits about 35 to 39 miles from the airport, depending on where you start, and the route is I-80 west through Parleys Canyon. On a clear day without traffic the trip runs about 40 to 55 minutes. Uber's route page averages 36 miles and 41 minutes for the run.

Where you start matters a little:

Starting pointRough distance to SLC (our router check)Notes
Canyons Villageabout 35 miClosest of the resort bases to I-80
Old Town, Main Street, Park City Mountain base38–39 miThrough town on SR-224 first
Deer Valley Snow Parkabout 39 miThrough town first
Deer Valley East Villageabout 44 miVia US-40 and I-80
Heber City and Midwayabout 51–52 miUS-40, then I-80

What makes it take longer

Snow in Parleys Canyon. Parleys Summit is 7,120 feet, the highest point on I-80 in Utah, and averages about 153 inches of snow a year. UDOT activates the traction law there when conditions call for it. During a February 2026 storm, UDOT asked drivers to avoid or delay travel on Wasatch Back roads. One Park City lodging guide estimates storms add 15 to 30 minutes, and a bad storm can add more.

Holiday weekends. Everyone checks out at once. The blackout dates on Epic Local for 2026-27 are a good map of the busiest days: Nov. 27 and 28 (Thanksgiving), Dec. 26 to 31, Jan. 16 (Martin Luther King Jr. weekend) and Feb. 13 and 14 (Presidents' Day weekend). Expect heavy traffic at the start and end of those periods.

Getting out of town. Park City Transit is building longer bus run times into peak traffic hours this winter, which tells you the roads in town back up too. Allow for that before you even reach I-80.

Returning a rental car. Add time to fill the tank, return the car and get from the rental return to the terminal.

A simple rule for your pickup time

Our partner, Elite Transportation, publishes this guidance for Park City departures: a pickup about 3 hours before a domestic flight and 4 hours before an international one, plus 30 to 45 minutes in peak winter. That lines up with the drive math above, and it's a sensible default whoever is driving.

FlightLeave Park City, normal dayLeave Park City, peak winter, snow day or holiday
Domestic, 10 a.m.7:00 a.m.6:15–6:30 a.m.
Domestic, 2 p.m.11:00 a.m.10:15–10:30 a.m.
International, 1 p.m.9:00 a.m.8:15–8:30 a.m.

Adjust for your situation. Leave earlier if you're checking ski bags, returning a rental, traveling with small kids or flying on a holiday weekend. Your airline's check-in and bag-drop cutoffs are the hard deadline, so look them up for your flight. We couldn't load the airport's own website when we checked, so we can't quote its current guidance.

Leaving from the Cottonwood Canyons

Snowbird, Alta, Solitude and Brighton are a similar distance from the airport, but the canyon road is the risk, not the miles. UDOT often closes Little Cottonwood Canyon (SR-210) overnight for early-morning avalanche control, and an overnight interlodge order at Alta and Snowbird often goes with it. Once the road is closed to downhill traffic, guests can't leave until mitigation is done, and reopening times can slip if slides cover the road.

If you're flying out the morning after a storm:

  • check UDOT's Cottonwood Canyons status feed and @UDOTcottonwoods the evening before,
  • ask your lodge whether an interlodge or road closure is expected,
  • consider moving down to the valley the night before if a big storm is forecast and your flight can't move.

Early flights and the bus

If you're using public transit, the first High Valley Transit 107 leaves Kimball Junction at 4:51 a.m. and reaches downtown Salt Lake at 5:45 a.m., then you still need TRAX to the airport. That's too late for the first wave of departures, and buses run about every 90 minutes after that. It works for a midday flight with a generous margin. Our public transit guide has the full timetable.

For an early flight, book a ride the day before and confirm the pickup time in writing. Rideshare at 4 a.m. in Park City is possible, but you're counting on a driver being awake and nearby. For more on that, see Uber and Lyft from SLC to the ski resorts.

Common questions

How long is the drive from Park City to Salt Lake City airport?

About 35 to 39 miles and 40 to 55 minutes in normal conditions, depending on where in Park City you start. Uber's route page averages 36 miles and 41 minutes. Snowstorms in Parleys Canyon and holiday weekend traffic can add a lot more, so plan on extra time from December through March.

How early should I leave Park City for a 7 a.m. flight?

For a domestic flight, about 4 a.m., and earlier if it's snowing. That follows the 3-hour rule with a margin for an early-morning storm. Book your ride the day before, check road conditions before bed, and keep your phone on so the company can reach you if they want to move the pickup earlier.

Is 2 hours enough time to get from Park City to SLC airport?

On a clear weekday with a carry-on only, it can work, but it leaves almost nothing for traffic, a slow bag drop or a security line. On a snow day or a holiday weekend, two hours is a gamble. We would not plan around it.
