Utah Ski Resorts by Distance from SLC Airport

Updated Oct 16, 2026.

Nine Utah ski resorts sit within about 90 minutes of Salt Lake City International Airport in normal conditions. The Cottonwood Canyon resorts are closest by the map, Park City and Deer Valley are a straight run up I-80, and Snowbasin, Sundance and Powder Mountain are farther out to the north and south.

The table above lists every destination by distance from SLC airport. This page covers the decision behind it: which area to stay in, which resorts fit your pass and your group, and how you'll get around once you land. For a strict ranking by mileage with the source of each number, see the ski resorts closest to SLC airport.

How to choose a base

Most trips from SLC settle on one of four areas. Each has its own road, its own way of getting around and its own set of resorts within easy reach.

Park City and Deer Valley

Park City has two big resorts. Park City Mountain has a base in town (Mountain Village) and a second one at Canyons Village, on the SR-224 side near Kimball Junction. Deer Valley sits on the other side of town. You get there on I-80 through Parleys Canyon, which tops out at 7,120 feet at Parleys Summit.

The big advantage is that you don't need a car. Park City's buses have been fare-free since 1975 and link town with the base areas of both resorts. Our guide on whether you need a car in Park City has the details.

Start with the route guides for getting from SLC airport to Park City, Canyons Village and Deer Valley. Deer Valley now has four base areas, including the new East Village off US-40, so read Deer Valley's base areas explained before you book a ride.

The Cottonwood Canyons

Snowbird and Alta sit at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon on SR-210. Solitude and Brighton are up Big Cottonwood Canyon on SR-190. They're the closest resorts to the airport by mileage, and staying up there puts you on the lifts without a morning commute.

The trade-off is the road. SR-210 is a 13-mile dead end that crosses 64 avalanche paths, and in winter SR-190 is a dead end too, because Guardsman Pass over to Park City is closed. Alta is skiers only, so snowboarders should look at Snowbird, Solitude or Brighton.

Ogden Valley

Snowbasin and Powder Mountain are north of Salt Lake. Snowbasin is reached on I-84 through Weber Canyon and then Trappers Loop (SR-167), and Ikon lists it at 46 miles and about 45 minutes from the airport. Powder Mountain is farther, up Ogden Canyon and then the steep SR-158 through Eden. Its 2026-27 season is set to open Dec. 11.

Route guides: SLC airport to Snowbasin and SLC airport to Powder Mountain.

Provo Canyon and the Heber Valley

Sundance Mountain Resort is in Provo Canyon, about an hour from SLC airport according to the resort, via I-15 south, US-189 and a short climb on SR-92. Heber City and Midway sit east of the Wasatch on US-40, past Jordanelle Reservoir. The City of Midway puts the drive at 51 miles from the airport. From the Heber Valley you're close to Deer Valley East Village, and US-189 runs down Provo Canyon toward Sundance.

Canyon roads vs the interstate

Getting to Park City, Deer Valley or the Heber Valley means I-80 through Parleys Canyon. UDOT's traction law covers that stretch, and in big storms UDOT has asked drivers to delay or skip the trip (it did in February 2026). Still, it's an interstate, and the canyon-only rules below don't apply to it.

The Cottonwood Canyons are stricter. They're a Class 3 traction-law zone, so when the beacons at the canyon mouth flash, tires need at least 5/32 inch of tread, and since 2025 UDOT can require compliance up to 24 hours before a storm. Police checkpoints can turn back cars that don't comply. On top of that, UDOT closes SR-210 for avalanche control, sometimes for hours, and Alta and Snowbird can go into Interlodge, when everyone has to stay indoors.

If you're renting a car for a canyon trip, read whether you need 4WD for a Utah ski trip first. Snowbird notes that traction devices aren't standard on Utah rental cars.

Passes at a glance

For 2026-27, Park City Mountain is the only Epic resort in the area. The Ikon Pass covers the rest of the big names: Deer Valley, Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, Solitude and Snowbasin, with Deer Valley requiring lift reservations for Ikon holders. Alta, Snowbird and Snowbasin are also on the Mountain Collective. Powder Mountain and Sundance aren't on Epic, Ikon or the Mountain Collective, but all nine resorts are on Ski Utah's own Gold and Yeti passes.

The details, including blackout dates and the Ikon Base exceptions, are in our Ikon vs Epic guide for Utah. Opening days are in Utah ski season dates for 2026-27.

Getting between resorts

Inside Park City, the free buses do the work. Between areas it's harder. In winter there's no road over the mountains from Big Cottonwood to Park City, because Guardsman Pass is closed from about Nov. 1 to May 25, so every trip between Park City and the Cottonwoods goes back down to I-80 and around through the Salt Lake Valley.

UTA's ski buses ($5 one way, included with Ikon and resort season passes) run to the Cottonwood resorts, Snowbasin, Powder Mountain and Sundance from stops in the valley, not from Park City. If you're staying in Park City, our partner Elite Transportation runs private one-way rides from town to the Cottonwoods, Snowbasin, Sundance and Powder Mountain. See Park City to the Cottonwood Canyons for that trip and how to ski several Utah resorts in one trip for a full plan.
