The Ski Resorts Closest to SLC Airport
Oct 16, 2026 SLC Mountain Transfers team 5 min read
A ranked list of Utah resorts by distance from the airport, where each number comes from, and why the closest one isn't always the fastest in a storm.
Quick answer
- Snowbird is the closest ski resort to SLC airport, at about 29 miles up Little Cottonwood Canyon (SR-210).
- Alta (32 miles) and Solitude (34 miles) come next, both in the Cottonwood Canyons.
- Canyons Village and the rest of Park City are about 35 to 39 miles away on I-80, with Deer Valley at 38 miles.
- Snowbasin is about 46 miles, Sundance about an hour, and Powder Mountain the farthest at roughly 55 miles.
- Canyon closures for avalanche control can make the nearest resorts the slowest to reach on storm days.
Snowbird is the closest ski resort to Salt Lake City International Airport, about 29 miles away at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon. Alta, Solitude and the Park City resorts all follow within about ten miles, which is why so many people can land in the morning and still make it to the mountains for lunch.
The ranking below uses each resort's own published distance where one exists. Where it doesn't, it uses well-known third-party guides, and a free routing service as a cross-check. All drive times are for normal, dry conditions. None of them hold in a storm, and the closest resorts are the ones most likely to be cut off.
The closest ski resorts to SLC airport, ranked
| Rank | Resort | From SLC airport | Typical drive, normal conditions | Main road | Where the figure comes from |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Snowbird | about 29 mi | 40–45 min | I-215, then SR-210 up Little Cottonwood | Snowbird's site cites 29 mi. Ski.com gives 29 to 31 mi and the time |
| 2 | Alta | 32 mi | no official time (cross-check: 53 min) | SR-210 to the end of Little Cottonwood | Alta's driving page |
| 3 | Solitude | 34 mi | about 40–45 min | I-215, then SR-190 up Big Cottonwood | Solitude's transportation page. Time is a third-party estimate |
| 4 | Canyons Village | about 35 mi | about 35–45 min | I-80 through Parleys, then SR-224 | Third-party guides for Park City. No official figure |
| 5 | Park City (town and Mountain Village) | about 35–37 mi | about 35–45 min | I-80, then SR-224 | Third-party guides. Ski Utah says under 45 minutes |
| 6 | Brighton | about 37 mi | about 40 min | SR-190 to the top of Big Cottonwood | No official figure. Cross-check and one third-party guide |
| 7 | Deer Valley | 38 mi | no official time | I-80, then through Park City or US-40 | Deer Valley lists 38 mi. Ikon lists 39 |
| 8 | Snowbasin | 46 mi | about 45 min | I-15, I-84 through Weber Canyon, then SR-167 | Ikon Pass |
| 9 | Sundance | about 57 mi | about 1 hour | I-15 south, US-189, then SR-92 | Sundance gives the time. Mileage is from the cross-check |
| 10 | Powder Mountain | about 55 mi | about 75–90 min | I-15 to Ogden, SR-39, then SR-158 through Eden | Third-party guides disagree on time |
Sundance is ranked ahead of Powder Mountain because it's the quicker drive, even though the two mileages are close and come from different kinds of sources. The Heber Valley isn't a resort, but if you're staying there, the City of Midway puts Midway at 51 miles from the airport via I-80 and US-40. See getting to Heber City and Midway.
How these numbers were checked
Resorts don't measure the same way. Some quote miles from the airport, some from downtown Salt Lake, and few give a drive time at all. Alta, for example, lists 32 miles from the airport and 26 from downtown.
As a sanity check we also ran every destination through OSRM, a free router built on OpenStreetMap data, using free-flowing traffic. It gave similar distances (33 miles to Snowbird, 34 to Alta, 35 to Canyons Village, 39 to Deer Valley's Snow Park) but consistently longer times than the resorts publish, for example 52 minutes to Snowbird and 47 to Canyons Village. Treat it as a rough check, not an official figure. The table uses the published numbers wherever they exist.
Why "closest" can mislead in a storm
The four closest resorts all sit at the top of canyon roads. Snowbird and Alta share SR-210, a 13-mile dead-end road that crosses 64 avalanche paths. Solitude and Brighton share SR-190 in Big Cottonwood. During and after storms, UDOT closes these roads in stages for avalanche control, and reopening times can slip if slides cover the road. When SR-210 is closed overnight, Alta and Snowbird often go into Interlodge, meaning everyone stays indoors until crews finish.
Even when the roads are open, two things slow them down. The Cottonwood Canyons are a Class 3 traction-law zone, so cars without the right tires (5/32 inch tread minimum when the beacons flash) can be turned back at the canyon mouth. And on busy powder days and holidays the line of brake lights up the canyon, known locally as the red snake, can turn a 45-minute trip into a much longer one.
Park City, Canyons Village and Deer Valley are a few miles farther, but the route is I-80 through Parleys Canyon. Parleys has its own traction law and gets heavy snow at its 7,120-foot summit, so it isn't storm-proof. It doesn't have the dead-end canyon closures or Interlodge, though.
Closest resort by pass
If you already hold a pass, the closest resort that takes it is the one that matters.
| Pass (2026-27) | Closest resort | Distance from SLC airport |
|---|---|---|
| Ikon | Snowbird (7 days, shared with Alta) | about 29 mi |
| Ikon Base | Snowbird (5 days). Alta isn't on Base | about 29 mi |
| Epic | Park City Mountain, via Canyons Village | about 35 mi |
| Mountain Collective | Snowbird or Alta (2 days each) | about 29 to 32 mi |
Powder Mountain and Sundance aren't on Epic, Ikon or the Mountain Collective. The full breakdown is in Ikon vs Epic for Utah resorts.
Getting there without driving
From the airport you have three realistic options for the closest resorts. UTA's ski buses ($5 one way, included with Ikon and resort season passes) serve Snowbird, Alta, Solitude and Brighton, but they leave from stops in the Salt Lake Valley rather than the airport, so you'd need to get there first. Rideshare works from the airport's ground-level pickup zone, though canyon rules and return trips are the catch, as our Uber and Lyft guide explains. A private transfer takes you from baggage claim to the lodge door.
For Park City and Canyons Village, the free town buses make life without a car easy once you're there.

Common questions
What is the closest ski resort to Salt Lake City airport?
Snowbird, at about 29 miles up Little Cottonwood Canyon on SR-210. Alta is just past it at 32 miles, at the end of the same road. Both depend on one canyon road that can close for avalanche control, so on storm mornings they can take longer to reach than resorts farther away on the interstate.
Which is closer to SLC airport, Park City or the Cottonwood Canyons?
By mileage, Snowbird, Alta and Solitude are a little closer (about 29 to 34 miles) than Park City (about 35 to 39 miles). In normal conditions all of them are under an hour away. Park City is reached on I-80, while the Cottonwood resorts sit at the top of canyon roads with stricter traction rules and avalanche closures.
What is the closest Epic Pass resort to SLC airport?
Park City Mountain is the only Epic resort near Salt Lake City for 2026-27, and its Canyons Village base is the closest point to the airport, about 35 miles away via I-80 and SR-224. The Mountain Village base in town is a few miles farther.
Can I ski the same day I land at SLC?
It's possible with a morning arrival, because several resorts are under an hour away in normal conditions. Allow for baggage claim, picking up rentals or your ride, and the canyon road. On storm days a canyon closure can delay you for hours, so don't count on a first-day ski session if snow is in the forecast.
